Literally, "bonsai" is translated as "a plant in a flat vessel." And despite the fact that the culture of growing miniature trees got its modern designation by combining the Japanese words “bon” (“container”) and “sai” (“tree”), in fact it comes from China, and the term itself comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the original Chinese characters "Pen-Zai". The habit of growing bonsai in containers or on trays was part of a Chinese horticultural culture developed, and the first depictions of miniature landscapes of trees and stones date back to the Han Dynasty, 200 BC. e. One of the legends says that the emperor gave the order to recreate a miniature copy of the empire with all the trees, cities, rivers and mountains. For this purpose, dwarf trees were created. There is another legend, according to which the poor, who left their native villages due to poverty and moved to the city, yearned for nature so much that they created miniature copies of trees. Subsequently, this hobby spread among the nobility. It is worth noting that in China, bonsai trees were not endowed with a deep philosophical meaning and played an exclusively decorative role.

What could not be said about Japan, where the art of bonsai was brought in the VI century by Buddhist monks. Graceful tiny trees have found shelter in Buddhist monasteries and it is from there that the Japanese technique of growing “trees on trays” originates. As in China, this occupation has become the privilege of the noble and wealthy. In the 13th century, graceful plants in no less elegant vessels become decorations in the gardens and houses of the Japanese nobility, becoming an important link in Japanese philosophy, which linked together the spirit of Man and the ancient belief in the power of natural forces. After some time, bonsai began to be actively used during the tea ceremony, and this direction was called “hachi-no-ki”.

Finally rooted and perfected in Japan, the technique of growing bonsai has become a real art with many traditional and special styles.

Spread bonsai

At the end of the 19th century, the first bonsai plants began to enter Europe and North America. So, at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878, trees brought from Japan were delighted with visitors who had come to the French capital of the whole world. The first bonsai competition as a separate art form was held in Tokyo in 1892, but the first major bonsai exhibition was held in the Japanese capital only in 1927.

Thus, the “culture of growing plants on a tray” gradually spread around the globe and found its fans in different parts of the world.

BONSAI STYLES

• - Formal Straight Style (直幹 Tekkan) A straight trunk that gets thicker towards the roots;
• - Informal straight style (模様木 Moyogi) The branches or trunk may be slightly curved, but the top of the trunk is always in a straight line perpendicular to the ground;
• - Double trunk (jap. 双幹 Sokan) A composition of two trunks, which can be different in size and form one crown;
• - Inclined style (jap. 斜幹 Shakan) A straight trunk growing at an angle to the ground;
• - Cascade (jap. 懸崖 Kengai) Simulates the growth of trees near the water or in the mountains. In a full cascade, the top of the tree grows beyond the border of the pot and falls well below the soil in the pot;
• - Semi-cascading style (半懸崖 Han-kengai) The top of the tree remains at the level of the soil of the bowl;
• - Literary style (jap. 文人木 Bunjingi) A straight trunk with a minimum number of branches.
• Root on a stone (Jap. 石上樹 Sekijoju) The trunk is located on a stone protruding above the surface of the earth, which is braided with roots.
• Growing-on-Rock (Japanese: 石付 Ishitsuki) The roots of a tree grow in the crevices of the rock. This style is used to illustrate the hardiness of a tree (because of limited root space).
• Fan style or broom (Jap. 箒立ち Hokidachi) The trunk is straight, the branches spread around it at about ⅓ of the height of the tree, forming a ball.
• Group Style (Japanese: 寄せ植え Yose Ue) There is a group of trees in the bowl, usually odd (the mental features of the Japanese), but never equal to four (the word "four" in Japanese is consonant with the word "death"). Often in a pot there are trees of the same species. The beauty of the composition lies in the combination of heights and ages of these trees.
• Carnivorous style (Japanese: 筏吹き Ikadabuki) A tree that has fallen into a swamp is imitated. It has the shape of a raft and is formed due to the trunk lying on the ground, from which trees of various lengths depart.

Miniature trees are no different from large plants: they have a strong root system, sinewy branches and foliage. On average, a live bonsai reaches 120 cm in height, and the smallest options range from 5-30 cm. Often ordinary trees are used now - they become small due to constant pruning and various other techniques. At the same time, the ratio of the sizes of the root system, limited by the volume of the vessel, and the ground part of the bonsai corresponds to the proportions of an adult tree in nature. Therefore, in order to maintain healthy development and a beautiful appearance, care for living trees must be regular and thorough.
